On streets designed for 45 mph or less, either type can be used, so your plans or your town's detail decide. Not sure which yours calls for? We'll go over the plans at your free quote visit.
How we build it
A curb only works if it's on line and on grade. Here's the order.
The profile, the joints, and the concrete all come from your plans or your town's standard detail.
Excavated and graded, then set on an aggregate base. New Lenox's detail calls for 4 in. of crushed aggregate.

Lines and grades are set so the gutter carries water to the drains.
Poured and finished to the profile by the same crew that graded it.
Sawed 2 in. deep 4 to 24 hours after the pour, then sealed. IDOT's standard keeps them 15 ft apart or less.

Cured before it takes traffic, then kept free of deicers for its first year.

The standard
From IDOT's standard, Will County's code, and one neighboring village's detail. Ask any contractor which detail they're building to.
Will County's subdivision rules require Type B-6.12 curb and gutter, built to IDOT standards.

Towns set their own numbers. IDOT caps contraction joints at 15 ft; New Lenox's detail allows up to 20.

Where driveways, sidewalks, and paths reach the road, Will County's rules have the curb depressed or cut to IDOT standards.

Gutters carry salty runoff. For severe exposure, NRMCA calls for 6–7% air, and at least 4,000 psi where deicers are used.

It's IDOT's shorthand. B means barrier, a curb with a vertical face. The 6 is the curb height in inches, and the 12 is the gutter width in inches.

A barrier curb has a vertical face, and a mountable curb has a sloping one. On streets designed for 45 mph or less, either can be used, so your plans or your town's detail decide.

It depends on the detail. New Lenox's calls for 3/4 in. expansion joints:
Two 2 ft dowels go in at each expansion joint and wherever new curb meets old.

Under Will County's subdivision rules, it's required in every nonresidential subdivision, in residential ones where lots average less than 120 ft wide at the front, and where slopes exceed 5%. The required type is B-6.12.

Keep deicers off it for the first year, and never use ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate.
