Before you pour in Chicago
Chicago's rules, in plain terms.
Every town sets its own rules. Here's what Chicago asks for, so you know before you call.
Flatwork on your lot
Ground-level concrete sidewalks, patios, walkways, and driveways on private property, outside the public way and not over a basement, don't need a building permit. Creating or expanding a parking area does.
The apron crosses city property
A driveway across the public sidewalk needs a use-of-public-way permit from CDOT, and a licensed sidewalk contractor must get the driveway construction permit.
Eight inches at the sidewalk
City code calls for driveways across the public sidewalk to be concrete eight inches deep.
Locates go through 811 Chicago
Inside city limits, excavators notify 811 Chicago (DIGGER) at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays, before digging.

Not for a ground-level concrete patio, walkway, or driveway on your own lot that isn't over a basement. A permit is required to create or expand an off-street parking area.
A driveway construction permit must be obtained by a licensed sidewalk contractor before the driveway can be built, and new residential driveway applications must be signed by the Zoning Department.
Chicago's Shared Cost Sidewalk Program lets property owners share the cost of replacing public sidewalk with the city. Applications go through 311, and participation depends on available funds.
